The International Federation of Consulting Engineers (FIDIC) has signed a three-year memorandum of understanding with World Wildlife Fund (WWF) to support their respective organisations’ ambitions to promote approaches to sustainable infrastructure planning, design, development and delivery. The new agreement carries forward the work of the MoU originally signed in 2021 and subsequently updated in 2023.
FIDIC and WWF are aiming to:
- Expand upon the Playbook for Nature-Positive Infrastructure Development and associated materials including training modules, courses and project case studies, identifying best practices and approaches to advancing sustainable infrastructure development relevant to WWF and FIDIC’s respective portfolios and those of their partners and members.
- Mutually seek partnership opportunities, including speaking engagements, participation in global conventions and meetings, joint publication of reports and papers.
- Oversee the development of practical recommendations and a roadmap for integrating biodiversity and nature-positive provisions into FIDIC contract documents and associated materials.
- Codevelop and deliver knowledge products, workshops and other resources, including integrating nature-positive principles into engineering education and training, to contribute to the goals of the UN Decade of Sustainable Transport.
Commenting on the agreement, which was signed at a meeting between WWF and FIDIC in Washington DC on 4 May 2026, FIDIC chief executive officer Susanna Zammataro said: “I’m delighted to renew our partnership with WWF. Over the next three years, we will move beyond high-level goals to ensure biodiversity is a core component of infrastructure design. By leveraging FIDIC’s global network, we are providing the engineering community with the technical tools and contract frameworks needed to deliver truly nature-positive development. High-quality, sustainable infrastructure is critical for the future of the planet and our collaboration with WWF ensures we translate that ambition into measurable, global impact.”
Nik Sekhran, chief conservation officer at WWF-US, said: “The collaboration between WWF and FIDIC allows us to advance our shared objectives around the design, development and delivery of sustainable infrastructure. Both organisations have significant global reach and can draw on extensive expertise to further best practices in engineering, conservation and sustainable development. We are looking forward to working closely with FIDIC as we continue to pursue these shared interests.”
