The 31st FIDIC Africa Infrastructure Conference, held from 10 to 13 May 2026 in Accra, Ghana, brought a landmark moment for African engineering: the formal inauguration of Engr. George Chukwulewa Okoroma as President of FIDIC Africa.
Hosted by the Ghana Consulting Engineers Association (GCEA) in collaboration with FIDIC Africa, the conference convened engineers, policymakers, development finance institutions and the next generation of African professionals under the theme "Future-Ready Infrastructure: Advancing Africa Through Innovation and Sustainability."
Okoroma, a civil engineer with over four decades of practice, becomes the first Nigerian to assume the FIDIC Africa presidency in recent history. At the national level, Okoroma served as the 18th President of the Association for Consulting Engineering in Nigeria (ACEN).
His continental agenda rests on four priorities: enforcing genuine local engineering participation in infrastructure procurement; deepening FIDIC Africa's partnerships with the African Union and the African Development Bank; expanding the FIDIC Africa Future Leaders programme; and making African infrastructure projects more attractive to international capital through stronger integrity frameworks and contract standards.
"The core of FIDIC's answer to the financing gap is not simply to find more money," Okoroma said. "It is to make African infrastructure projects worthy of the money that already exists globally. When projects are poorly scoped, opaquely contracted, or supervised without independent engineering oversight, international investors and development finance institutions walk away."
FIDIC Africa unites professional consulting engineering associations across the continent in advancing the standards, ethics and capacity of the profession in support of sustainable infrastructure development.
